WE BELIEVE—Plumb Line session 5
I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line.
Amos 7:7-9 Then He showed me this: The Lord was standing by a wall built with a plumb line, and in His hand was a plumb line. Eternal One: 8 What do you see, Amos? Amos: A plumb line. Eternal One: Watch what I’m about to do! I am going to put a plumb line up against My people Israel to see what is straight and true, And I will not look the other way any longer.9 The high places of Isaac will be destroyed and the religious shrines of Israel reduced to ruin, And with sword in hand, I will bring down the house of Jeroboam the king.
Isaiah 28:17 I will make justice the measuring line and righteousness the plumb line;
hail will sweep away your refuge, the lie, and water will overflow your hiding place.
A plumb line is a perfectly straight line created by a weight suspended from a string. Builders use it as a standard to measure the accuracy of their work. Metaphorically, the plumb line represents God’s standard of righteousness, by which He evaluates our lives.
2 Kings 21:13 I will stretch out over Jerusalem the measuring line used against Samaria and the plumb line used against the house of Ahab. I will wipe out Jerusalem as one wipes a dish, wiping it and turning it upside down.
Isaiah 34:11 The desert owl and screech owl will possess it; the great owl and the raven will nest there. God will stretch out over Edom the measuring line of chaos and the plumb line of desolation.
GOD HAS STANDARDS – Psalm 45 verse 6 Your throne, O God, is forever and ever; A scepter of righteousness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
1 Corinthians 1:30-31 It is because of Him that you are in Christ Jesus, who has become for us wisdom from God—that is, our righteousness, holiness, and redemption. 31 Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.
Righteousness represents the nature and character of God Himself.
For instance, in the apostolic season today, God is focusing on the restoration of community, which is based on divinely ordained relationships rather than mere membership in an institution. This shift emphasizes relationships over traditional membership. THE PLUMBLINE SHOWS US THE STANDARD of community as a relationship instead of superficial membership.
Scripture conveys His breath, His life, and the divine resources that flow to us.
In this new season, we see that the goal of discipleship is to release disciples into their divine purpose and to help them engage in their unique destinies (Ephesians 4- do the work of the ministry – be the image and likeness of God- original intent and design)), rather than just gathering church members.
1 Corinthians 15:33-34 Do not be deceived: “Evil company corrupts good habits.” 34 Awake to righteousness, and do not sin; for some do not have the knowledge of God. I speak this to your shame. (To awaken, you need to have the knowledge of God. The Word serves as the plumb line.)
Proverbs 21:3 To do what is right and just is more acceptable to the Lord than sacrifice.
Proverbs 21:21 One who pursues righteousness and loyalty finds life, righteousness, and honor.
1 Timothy 6:11 But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness.
Righteousness is the original design and original intent, and it involves being compliant with the Eternal standard. God has preferences, and Scripture conveys His breath, His life, and the divine resources that flow to us. Our righteousness comes from God based on our faith. Philippians 3:7-9 But whatever were gains to me I now consider loss for the sake of Christ. 8 What is more, I consider everything a loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them garbage, that I may gain Christ 9 and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ—the righteousness that comes from God on the basis of faith.
Galatians 2:20 KJV “I am crucified with Christ: nevertheless I live; yet not I, but Christ liveth in me: and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by the faith of the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself for me.”
