Let us be approaching our Word study moments with love as our primary heart position. So, we ask Him to quicken out hearts, give us clarity, perfect our attitudes, teach us, facilitate the process of receiving and obeying what we study all the while we are praising and adoring Him as we discover wondrous things in His law. Like David, we commit to studying His instructions, repeating them aloud to ourselves , taking pleasure in them because He loves us, and we love Him right back.
Matthew 22:37-40 Jesus answered, “‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ 38 This is the greatest and the most important commandment. 39 The second most important commandment is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as you love yourself’ 40 The whole Law of Moses and the teachings of the prophets depend on these two commandments.”
Love is central to the study of God’s Word. The state of my being -who I am, what I believe will affect my practice of study of the Word. We have learned previously that the Word of God and His Spirit are the primary means of sanctification , our communion with God through the Word has one overarching intention, to bring us into harmony with Him, to make us His image and His likeness.
Galatians 5:14-15 For all the law can be summarized in one grand statement: “Demonstrate love to your neighbor, even as you care for and love yourself.“ 15 But if you continue to criticize and come against each other over minor issues, you’re acting like wild beasts trying to destroy one another.
Scriptures such as Hebrews 4:12-13 For we have the living Word of God, which is full of energy, like a two-mouthed sword. It will even penetrate to the very core of our being where soul and spirit, bone and marrow meet! It interprets and reveals the true thoughts and secret motives of our hearts. 13There is not one person who can hide their thoughts from God, for nothing that we do remains a secret, and nothing created is concealed, but everything is exposed and defenseless before his eyes, to whom we must render an account.
The Word of God is Alive and Interactive. So, when we approach the Word, we are approaching Him. The Bible, consisting of the Old and New Testament Scriptures (66 Books), in its original form, is the fully inspired, inerrant and infallible Word of God. We believe this!!
Let us talk about the nature of God as a factor to consider when we approach the Word. The Authority of God the father, The Lordship of the Son and the Presence of the Holy Spirit speaks to us in Scripture.
Our study of the Word is not mechanical , Christ is the one we interact with in the Word. John 14:6 Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
Psalm 119:105 Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path. The scriptures reveal the nature, purpose and will of God. We partake in the Divine nature of Christ by receiving , submitting, and obeying the teachings in the scriptures.
Ephesians 5:25-27 And to the husbands, you are to demonstrate love for your wives with the same tender devotion that Christ demonstrated to us, His bride. For He died for us, sacrificing Himself to make us holy and pure, cleansing us through the showering of the pure water of the Word of God. All that He does in us is designed to make us a mature church for His pleasure, until we become a source of praise to Him-glorious and radiant, beautiful and holy, without fault or flaw.
1 Peter 1:22-23 Now, because of your obedience to the truth, you have purified your very souls, and this empowers you to be full of love for your fellow believers. So, express this sincere love toward one another passionately and with a pure heart. 23 For through the eternal and living Word of God you have been born again. And this “seed” that he planted within you can never be destroyed but will live and grow inside of you forever. For: (cleansing, purification comes by the Word , empowerment to love others comes by the Word- in that we are obeying it, when we leave the chamber of communing with the Word, we emerge cleansed, loving, and unshakeable in our confidence in the LORD)
Father, we thank You for the promise of Christ in us growing forever, we thank You for the empowerment to love others. we thank You for increasing our knowledge of You, we look to You to lead us in processes that will create and fortify an intense love for You and Your Word. Break down every resistance to Your instructions within us and corporately. Give us diligence in studying the Word and handling it accurately in the mighty Name of Jesus we pray. Amen.
