Psalm 91:1-2 When you abide under the shadow of Shaddai, you are hidden in the strength of God Most High. 2 He’s the hope that holds me and the stronghold to shelter me,
the only God for me, and my great confidence.
Last week we spent time reflecting on the Shadow of the Almighty by gazing at His Name to know His nature and to find our identity and purpose in Him. We saw how awesome our Father is El Shaddai – The All-sufficient God, El Elyon the Most High, Yahweh- I shall be what I shall be, Elohay our God , a personal God who is acquainted with all your personal ways He know when you rise and when you fall!
ABIDE is to DWELL no wonder the use of either words in Psalm 91. What does it really mean to abide or dwell? It means to remain, tarry, continue, settle and permanently stay, attached, endure in a relationship without quitting.
Abide or dwell touches on our everyday thoughts , choices, attitudes and behaviors. We have said this previously that our faith is practical. For example, this scripture in Deuteronomy 12:11 (NKJV) “Then there will be the place where the LORD your God chooses to make His name abide. There you shall bring all that I command you: your burnt offerings, your sacrifices, your tithes, the heave offerings of your hand, and all your choice offerings which you vow to the LORD.
This scripture tells us something about abiding, abiding requires making a CHOICE! You and I decide where we will settle or rest. The same way when driving you can decide which rest area to stop at, you decide where you will camp and or dwell. The beautiful news is that when you and I make the choice to abide in the shelter of the Most High then all the promises of security and protection are our own because the God whose nature we saw last week will show Him strong on our behalf.
Here is another scripture that tells us something about “abide” Job 24:13 (NKJV) “There are those who rebel against the light; They do not know its ways Nor abide in its paths.
We know that God is Light! We see this in 1 John 1:5-9 This is the message we have heard from Him and declare to you: God is light; in Him there is no darkness at all. 6 If we claim to have fellowship with Him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth. 7 But if we walk in the light, as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, His Son, purifies us from all sin.8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us. 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make Him out to be a liar and His Word is not in us.
The scriptures above tell us the nature of the relationship with God and those who abide in Him.
What do we see? Those that abide in the shelter of the Most High are not rebels to Light in fact in Matthew 5 our identity as the children of God is “light”, you are the light of world says our Father! What else do we see? To abide requires KNOWLEDGE of God and His ways. It is said of Moses in Psalms 103 that to Moses God revealed His character or ways but to Israel His deeds! To know God is to be intimate with Him and produce an offspring called His image and
likeness that can represent Him. We are told Adam “Knew” his wife and she became pregnant, this is not casual knowing, it is becoming! This is knowledge beyond information. This is knowledge of relationship, it is beyond doubt, oh to know You LORD is the cry of our heart.
Let us look at “know” John 10:14-15 “I am the good shepherd; I know my sheep and my sheep know me— 15 just as the Father knows me and I know the Father—and I lay down my life for the sheep. This kind of knowledge leads to love and obedience. Our dwelling in the shelter of the Most High is beyond taking cover somewhere because it is raining or too sunny.
Another thing we are discovering that abiding has to do with LOVE. Loving God Loving others is abiding in the shelter of the Most High. This study is showing us how to abide. It is to walk in the paths God has ordained! – 1 John 4:7-12 Dear friends, let us love one another, for love comes from God. Everyone who loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Whoever does not love does not know God, because God is love. 9 This is how God showed his love among us: He sent his one and only Son into the world that we might live through him. 10 This is love: not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. 11 Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. 12 No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and His love is made complete in us.
The scripture above in verse 9 tells us that. This is how God showed His love among us: He sent His one and only Son into the world so that we might live through Him. This Son is the One we find in John called the WORD! Abiding is being made of the same substance as God. Abiding is living our everyday life through our LORD JESUS CHRIST. And how do we do this? In our series on Grace, we heard that the Word became flesh. John 1:14 The Word became flesh and made His dwelling among us. We have seen His glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
He has generously given us access to a new life; in this life, the Grace of God teaches us to say no to ungodliness. John 1:16 Out of his fullness we have all received grace in place of grace already given.
Grace is communicated through the word of God, once you hear it you have received Truth (A Person, A Principle to live your life by). Faith comes by hearing and hearing the Word of God. This truth configures your thoughts, choices, attitude and actions. This is abiding!
1 John 4: 13-15 By this we know that we abide in Him and He in us because He has given us of His Spirit. 14 And we have seen and testify that the Father has sent His Son to be the Savior of the world. 15 Whoever confesses that Jesus is the Son of God, God abides in him, and he in God. 16 So we have come to know and to believe the love that God has for us. God is love, and whoever abides in love abides in God, and God abides in him.
And finally, today abiding is about FAITH!
Let us Pray :
Holy Ghost we receive Your Words, we are willing to be subjects to the Words and Counsel You have communicated and will continue to communicate to us as You reveal the Son of God in us. Possess us LORD let the life each of us now lives be empowered by the faith of the Son of God who loves us so much that He gave Himself for us, dispensing His life into ours! AMEN
